Most coatings are useful for some patients. Few are useful for everyone. We sell what helps.

More than plain glass.

Modern lenses are not just plastic discs ground to a prescription. They have multiple coatings and treatments that change how they behave in real-world conditions. The right coatings, for the right person, make a noticeable difference. The wrong ones are a waste of money.

Anti-reflection coatings reduce glare from screens, oncoming headlights, and overhead lights. Useful for almost everyone. Blue-light filtering reduces eye strain from prolonged screen time. Useful for office workers and heavy device users. DriveSafe lenses are designed for night driving, with reduced glare from oncoming headlights. Useful for anyone who drives in the dark. Photochromic lenses darken in sunlight and return to clear indoors. Useful for anyone who is regularly in and out.

Scratch-resistant treatments add years to lens life. Hydrophobic coatings make rain and water bead off rather than smear. UV protection is now standard on most lenses. We will tell you, on each prescription, which coatings will earn their keep and which are more profit than benefit.

Common questions

What you might be wondering.

Do I really need anti-reflection coating?
If you spend any time on a screen, drive at night, or sit under bright office lights, yes. It is one of the upgrades almost everyone benefits from.
Is blue-light filtering worth it?
If you work at a screen for several hours a day, yes. The evidence on long-term eye damage from blue light is mixed, but the evidence on short-term eye strain reduction is clear. Most office workers notice the difference.
What are DriveSafe lenses?
Lenses with a coating optimised for low-light driving. They reduce the dazzle from oncoming LED headlights, which are now standard on new cars and significantly more glaring than older bulbs. Worth it for anyone who drives at night more than occasionally.
Can I add coatings to existing glasses?
No. Coatings are baked into the lens during manufacture. Adding them later means new lenses, not new coatings on old lenses.
How long do coatings last?
Quality coatings last the lifetime of the lens, normally two to four years for most prescriptions. Cheap coatings can craze or peel within a year. We use coatings from manufacturers we trust.
Will you tell me which coatings I do not need?
Yes. We will not load up your lens order with extras you would not benefit from. That is what 'honest advice' means in practice.
